QASR AL MUWAIJI VISITOR CENTRE
DEPARTMENT OF CULTURE & TOURISM, ABU DHABI

HQWS was commissioned by the Department of Culture & Tourism, Abu Dhabi, to design and build a visitor centre at UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa’s birthplace – Qasr Al Muwaiji.

The centre, housed in an elegant glass-walled space within the courtyard of Qasr Al Muwaiji, tells the story of the fort and its inhabitants, with focus on HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Divided into seven main areas, the centre incorporates a new purpose built structure and the original fort tower of Qasr Al Muwaiji, creating a link between the old and new.

Visitors can gain an insight into the personal life of the President via themed rooms featuring a series of projections, quotes, interactive panels, animations and films dedicated to his passion for falconry, his education, lifestyle and milestones en route to becoming the country’s leader.

The main exhibition area features etched and projected content displayed on suspended glass screens, enabling visitors to experience the essence of the fort through the glass.

A wooden poem wall inscribed with a qasida, or classical Arabic tribute, written by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, in honour of his brother, forms a striking backdrop to the glass screens.
